The Impact of Obesity on Labor Market Outcomes in Korea

Abstract
This paper investigates the impact of obesity on employment in Korea using National Health and Nutrition Survey Data from 2005 to 2011. I use instrument variables to control for endogeneity of obesity and estimate employment equation by two step estimation method. The estimation results show that obesity has a positive effect on employment when obesity is defined as the Body Mass Index(BMI) over 25. However, obesity has a significant negative impact on employment when obesity is defined as the BMI over 30 or wast circumstances over 90cm for men and 80cm for women.
